Many of us try to eat yogurt every morning in the hope of maintaining or even improving our health. Alas, judging by the latest data from European experts, we are doing all these attempts in vain. Because the benefits of probiotic-fortified dairy products are nothing more than a myth propagated by manufacturers through advertising.

A large-scale clinical study conducted in 2009 refuted the data on the therapeutic effect of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria. Experts from consumer organizations in the European Union tested 180 ingredients that yoghurt manufacturers have marketed as having a healthier effect on the body.

According to the verdict, 10 supplements could not be considered useful at all, and the remaining 170 are not proven to be useful. For examination, 2 thousand dossiers were submitted for various dairy products, of which 523 were checked. Of the checked dossiers, experts rejected two-thirds. Claims arose for 200 items (vitamins, probiotics, dietary supplements, minerals, etc.).

"For too long, health benefits have been aggressively exploited for marketing by dairy producers," said a spokeswoman for the UK consumer group Which? "Now there are results, according to which it can be argued that some of the advertising is not true."

“In Russia, the giants of the dairy industry can live in peace,” Dmitry Yanin, chairman of the board of the International Confederation of Consumer Societies, commented to Gazeta.ru on the situation. - Alas, the Russian Institute of Nutrition of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, with its tests of the effects for marketing resources, supports the opinion about the health benefits of such products. I don’t want to say that they are harmful, just the benefits of them are the same as those of ordinary kefir, and there is no need to overpay for them many times”.

Nevertheless, doctors note that the presence of fermented milk products in the diet is highly desirable, since they are an excellent source of nutrients such as calcium, proteins, phosphorus and riboflavin (vitamin B2).
