Modern society prefers monogamy, but nevertheless, the topic of adultery is still at the center of heated discussions. Why are we cheating? Why are they cheating on us? As the researchers admit, in each case the reasons are individual, and nevertheless, people prone to adultery can be classified into two main types.

Tired of having sex with your current partner? This is a typical case of the first type. They are in a fairly strong and long-term relationship, but I really want to try something new. Often they are not looking for a novel "on the side" purposefully, but take advantage of suitable opportunities (on a business trip, at a conference, at work, or during a meeting with classmates).

The authors of another large-scale sociological study found that one of the main reasons for adultery is financial situation: the more a husband depends on his wife financially, the higher the likelihood of betrayal on his part. In the case of women, the opposite trend works.

Women of this type do not intend to part with their spouses at all, they just want to diversify their lives with romantic passion, researcher Eric Anderson said at the annual conference of the American Sociological Association.

A separate category is made up of unhappy people in marriage. For some serious reasons (children, financial dependence), they cannot file for divorce, and they have to look for emotionally stimulating relationships on the side.

At the same time, the border between the two types is blurred, the sociologist notes. An intermediate position, in particular, is occupied by those who take revenge on their partner with treason.
