Popular Italian fashion designer Roberto Cavalli has disgraced himself. He unveiled a collection of lingerie featuring Hindu gods, which sparked an outcry among UK Hindu communities, Vogue reports.

British Hindu representatives said the use of Vishna, King Rama and Sharasvati on bras is similar to the Jesus Christ prints on lingerie from a sex shop.

"

600,000 Indians across the UK have heeded the call of spiritual guides and defiantly ignore shops that dare to put up a Cavalli collection for sale. The largest department store Harrods immediately removed the models from its shelves.

"We have decided to withdraw this product, we promise, it will not appear on sale again. We apologize to all customers who are offended or hurt by this situation," said a spokesman for the Knightsbridge department store.

Meanwhile, Cavalli himself is shaken to the core by the negative public outcry. According to the designer's press secretary, there was an innocent mistake as a result of Cavalli's "passionate love" for India.

“We had no idea that the released collection could offend anyone,” the secretary justified.

This is not the first time that Cavalli's use of folk and religious themes has been criticized. Japanese stylized landscapes and Chinese dragons adorned kimonos and dresses in the spring-summer 2004 collection, which the Japanese themselves were terribly displeased with. It looks like the Italian was in the danger zone.
