The British scientist compared the falling leaves with "going to the restroom." According to his theory, getting rid of foliage, trees are freed from excess substances accumulated inside.
Traditionally, it is believed that with a drop in air temperature, trees go into a mode of saving resources, for which they get rid of leaves so that they do not have to spend money on their life support.
“We have long understood the importance of the leaf as a storage organ for energy through photosynthesis and homeostasis through evaporation. But the leaf is also used to remove unwanted substances from the tree. Therefore, all plants shed their leaves,”said Ford, who is president of the Cambridge Society for Applied Research.
The professor found that shortly before shedding the leaves, the level of potentially harmful components such as tannin and oxalate increases in them. The level of heavy metals in the leaves ready to fall is also growing, and, obviously, the tree will prefer to remove these substances rather than leave them stored for the winter, the researcher is sure.
In addition, shedding leaves does not cause a lack of moisture. After all, plants that live in water also shed their leaves. “It's important to understand what happens in the fall when the leaves turn red or yellow and then fall off. Plants have annual, so to speak, emptying,”he said.
However, according to the professor, this should not prevent people from getting aesthetic pleasure from the bright colors of autumn.
