The question of the intellectual advantage of the sexes has once again been resolved in favor of women. Scientists at Northwestern Medical School at Feinberg University have proven that we are smarter than men. True, this comes with age. And the reason lies in hormones.

According to scientists, the whole thing lies in the female hormone estrogen, which can be called an elixir for the brain. It increases mental performance in humans and animals by significantly increasing the number of connections between brain cells or neurons. These connections, called dendritic ridges, are small bridges that allow brain cells to "communicate" with each other.

Estrogens are the collective name for a subclass of steroid hormones produced by the female ovaries. Small amounts of estrogens are also produced by the testes in men and by the adrenal cortex in both sexes. Female estrogen levels increase mental capacity 20 times as much as male estrogen levels, and by itself has a significant impact on the production and response of nerve cells.

In women, estrogen is actively produced during the childbearing period. At the same time, estrogen treatment prescribed for women during menopause is considered a rather dangerous technique, since this hormone increases the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and breast cancer.

Using a special composition, scientists have developed a new method that allows you to mimic the effect of estrogen in the cells of the cerebral cortex. Thus, experts plan to develop new means to combat a number of ailments. “Once we fully understand the effects of these specific estrogen receptor formulations in preliminary trials, we can develop reliable treatments for mental impairment and depression,” said one specialist.
