What is the queen's must-have accessory? Of course, the crown. Or, as a last resort, a diadem. On the eve of the auction Sotheby's sold a piece of jewelry that will appeal to even the most capricious representative of any royal dynasty. The tiara with diamonds and emeralds was purchased for a record amount for such an adornment - $ 12.7 million.

The tiara is adorned with 11 pear-shaped Colombian emeralds with a total weight of over 500 carats. According to representatives of the auction house, a tiara equal to this one has not been on sale for more than 30 years.

Earlier, the emeralds that adorn the diadem belonged to the Indian maharaja, and then were in the collection of the French Empress Eugenie, wife of Napoleon III.

A rare pink diamond weighing 10.99 carats, set in a classic-shaped platinum ring, was also presented at the auction. The $ 10.8 million stone became the third most expensive pink diamond and the ninth most expensive diamond overall.

The diadem itself was made around 1900 by order of the Prussian Count Guido Henkel von Donnersmarck for his wife, Duchess Katharina Henkel von Donnersmarck, née Sleptsova, who came from a family of Moscow weavers. Experts tentatively estimated the jewelry at 4.5-9 million Swiss francs ($ 5-10 million), but its cost exceeded expectations - 11.3 million francs (about $ 12.7 million).

The auction also sold jewelry belonging to US Strategic Services Officer Marie-Aline Griffith, who was recruited in the United States and sent to Spain in 1943. Later, the scout married a Spanish aristocrat and received the title of Countess de Romanones. For her ring, earrings, bracelet, two necklaces and a handbag decorated with diamonds, buyers paid about 900 thousand dollars.
