What does every woman dream about? About a prince on a white horse and a luxurious diamond jewelry. The day before, a rare blue diamond, the dream of any socialite, was put up for auction in Geneva.

A rare 7.03 carat blue diamond was sold at Sotheby's 10.5 million Swiss francs ($ 9.49 million) on May 12. This blue rectangular stone, the rarest on the international market this year, was acquired by an unknown person. The purchase was made after two callers excitedly called prices for 15 minutes.

The diamond was found at the Cullinan mine in South Africa, its weight before cutting was 26.58 carats. Blue diamonds are considered the rarest in the world after red ones; the most expensive of these stones is Wittelsbach, weighing 35.56 carats, sold in 2008 for $ 24 million.

As noted by news agencies, the diamond set a world record for the price in terms of carats - $ 1.35 million per carat. The new owner of the diamond, put up for auction by London-based Petra Diamonds, has received the right to name the stone, which does not yet have a name. Previously, the record was $ 1.33 million per carat and was also set by a blue diamond in 2008.

The purchase of the rarest stone became the main event of the six months for the jewelry department of the Sotheby's auction in Europe and the Middle East. “This is a new world record for the value of a blue diamond,” said division chief David Bennett. "This is incredible for this market and shows that there is a very high demand for rare items." Last year, the 10.48-carat Fancy Deep Blue, a rare Fancy Deep Blue priced at 6.7 million Swiss francs ($ 6 million), went unsold.
