Video: Dare to Question Why We Are So Afraid of Getting Older: Scilla Elworthy at TEDxMarrakesh 2012 2024, November

A young girl stands in front of a mirror and scrutinously examines her face and hair. No, she's not looking for split ends or redness on her chin. She is worried about the gray hair that has come from nowhere and a couple of small wrinkles around the eyes. No matter how old this girl is - 25, 30 or 35, she, like many others, is terrified of old age and with every birthday she experiences less and less joy.

Of course, if a girl is a little over 20, then it is not worth saying that gray hair is a sign of aging of the body. There are many reasons why hair lose pigmentation. This is stress, and heredity, and even a bad environmental situation in a person's place of residence. But no matter what caused the changes in appearance, the fact remains: we think that we are getting old, and these thoughts do not make us happy. Older women who meet on our path in life are getting bored. Unfortunately, few of them look attractive when they are over 60 years old.

Not everyone manages to age beautifully, like an expensive wine: the more years it is, the better it is. Basically, the faces of older women eventually become covered with wrinkles, the bodies lose their elasticity, and health problems appear - shortness of breath, sciatica, insomnia and other “joys of life”.

We look at our grandmothers and mothers and understand that one day we will also not be able to easily fly up the stairs to the 5th floor and will start buying creams marked “anti-aging”. These thoughts are frightening, and old age seems like the end of life. But psychologists say: all this is only in our head, in fact, maturity is the same stage of life as childhood and adolescence. You will not look worse, you will simply become different. Therefore, it is important to learn to treat old age calmly in order to fully enjoy youth and meet a new life milestone with a smile.

Old age is not a disease

First, it is important to understand that aging is a completely natural process that will not bypass any of us. This is not a disease or something abnormal. Therefore, when you see the first wrinkle in the mirror, it is better to think about the fact that now the skin needs more thorough care, but in no case do not indulge in despondency. Stress, depression and despair are the worst illnesses you can catch out of fear of becoming weak. Everything else is just natural changes that you have to live with.

Old age is not a loss of beauty

Yes, young girls are attracted to men with delicate skin and a chiseled figure, but just look at your mother or older colleague: can you say that over the years they become ugly? No, because the beauty of older women is completely different. In their gaze - peace and wisdom (at least for most of them), and their smiles are so beautiful that those around them also want to smile. You should not be afraid of old age, thinking that your beauty will go away with its arrival. What is really worth fearing is the loss of interest in personal care. Unfortunately, many Russian women sin this: upon reaching a certain age, they change elegant dresses for shapeless sacks, stop doing even light makeup and voluntarily stand on a par with the so-called old women. If you are sure that you will never stop monitoring your appearance, then you have nothing to be afraid of.

If you are sure that you will never stop monitoring your appearance, then you have nothing to be afraid of.

Old age is not a punishment

Surprisingly, many women believe that old age is the punishment for a cheerful youth. Like, I enjoyed life, and that's enough - go to the bench to the "old lady friends" and sadness about the years gone by. Well, then, let's see youth as a punishment for a carefree childhood. I ran with classmates during breaks, went sledding - welcome to the "hard labor": work tirelessly, give birth to children, bring them up and watch them ride on sleds and rush around the yard. Well, isn't it nonsense? Each stage of life is beautiful in its own way. In old age, you will be surrounded by loving children and grandchildren. In old age, you can finally take a break from exhausting work, devote yourself to what you did not have enough time for before. And the wisdom gained over the years will help you manage this time wisely.

Old age is not idleness

Most of us are chilled by the word “retired”. If the option of unemployed old age does not suit you, then you should not despair in advance and now grab your head, thinking how you will sit at home all day long. Who said that retirement means automatic disability? This is not so: age does not say anything about energy and desire to work. Not hiring because of the age limit? It doesn't matter either.

Take a look: a lot of retired people are finally starting to do what they have dreamed of all their lives. Someone earns on a hobby, others become freelancers, and still others open their own business.

People say: beauty in youth is the work of nature, beauty in old age is the work of the woman herself. Right now, when old age is only your future, you can do everything possible to one day enter this state with your head held high. Lead a healthy lifestyle, take care of yourself, try to find something wonderful in every day you live, and you will not notice how all this will allow you to make maturity a wonderful time.
