For a long time, the ratio of height to weight has been actively used by physicians to determine the risk of developing obesity. But times are changing, and specialists are developing both more complicated and simplified formulas. So, British scientists have recently presented a very simple formula, which requires only a centimeter tape to calculate.
Measure your waist, halve your height, and compare the numbers. If your waist does not exceed half of your height, then you will not face serious problems with being overweight, but if your waist exceeds 85 cm with a height of 170 cm, then it is reasonable to consult a doctor.
According to British researchers in an article published in the journal Public Library of Science, the waist should not exceed half the height.
The most popular indicator of the degree of overweight today is the Body Mass Index (BMI) - the ratio of a person's weight and height. However, the researchers note that BMI scores do not always reflect the real picture.
For example, the average height of 30-year-old men is 178 centimeters. Therefore, their waist should be no more than 89 centimeters. If he reaches 107 centimeters (60% of his height), a man will lose 1.7 years of his life, writes Meddaily.ru with reference to The Mirror. The average height of a 30-year-old woman is about 162.5 cm. The life expectancy of a woman whose waist is 97.5 cm instead of 81 will decrease by 1.4 years.
As specified, the scientists evaluated data on mortality, health and lifestyle with a random sample of people, starting in 1985. At the same time, there was a sharp decrease in life expectancy among those who were obese. So, a 30-year-old man of average height with a waist volume of 142 centimeters died 20.2 years earlier, and a woman with a waist of 129.5 centimeters - 10.6 years earlier.

Scientists have created chocolate with a rejuvenating effect
Every woman knows perfectly well that chocolate cheers up. However, if you use too much of this antidepressant, problems with the figure are possible. Fortunately, science is not standing still, and scientists are working not only on revolutionary technologies in medicine, but also pleasant little things like chocolate that slow down the formation of wrinkles.
Scientists have dispelled myths about the size of male dignity
A rather peculiar gift for International Women's Day was presented by a group of British scientists. In a specialized edition dedicated to urology, the results of the largest and most objective study of the length of the male penis are published.
Scientists have developed a new theory of aging
The question "Is rejuvenation possible?" has been tormenting humanity for centuries. Scientists are desperately trying to invent an elixir of youth, or at least postpone the onset of old age. For the past few years, science has been dominated by the assumption that free radicals are to blame for the aging of the body, but a number of experts believe that the theory is already outdated.
A healthy lifestyle is not at all healthy
If you decide in the near future to become an adherent of the so-called healthy lifestyle (running in the morning, giving up sweets and alcohol), then first read the recommendations of experts, and then think carefully - do you need it? Based on recent research, the American College of Sports Medicine has debunked some of the misconceptions about healthy eating.
Scientists have developed a smartphone lens
Thinking of purchasing a new smartphone? Take your time, it is likely that today's latest gadgets will turn out to be hopelessly outdated junk in just a couple of years. And even quite compact iPhone 4S already looks very bulky in comparison with the new development of scientists.
