Peter's Lent is a many-day summer fast established in honor of the memory of the supreme apostles Peter and Paul. In 2022 it will start on June 20 and end on July 11. For every Orthodox, it is important to know the basic rules of fasting, it is advisable to have a food calendar at hand in order to compose a fasting menu every day.
Petrov post - rules
In Orthodoxy, fasting always implies compliance with certain rules and church canons:
- refusal from animal products - all types of meat, dairy products and eggs;
- you cannot drink alcohol during fasting, with the exception of Saturdays and Sundays, as well as Orthodox holidays - on these days you can drink a little red wine;
- you can not attend entertainment events, it is better to celebrate all holidays in a quiet family circle;
- it is worth limiting watching TV and using the Internet;
- it is forbidden to guess, to conduct magic rituals;
- according to church canons, you cannot get married during fasting, and spouses should refrain from intimate relationships.
The main thing is that during fasting you should not "nag" your loved ones, that is, swear, feel anger, and commit acts that can destroy peaceful relations between people.
Peter's fast is not very strict and if you look at the food calendar in 2022, you can cook fish on Tuesday, Thursday and weekends. On Monday you can eat hot food, but no oil. Dry eating days fall on Wednesday and Friday.
Lenten menu with recipes
You cannot eat meat and dairy products during fasting, but you can cook fish. This is the summer fast when the gathering of fruits and vegetables begins. Also, the list of permitted foods includes all types of cereals, legumes, nuts and mushrooms. Therefore, you can create a simple menu with recipes for lean, tasty and healthy dishes.
Ajapsandal - Lean Vegetable Stew
Petrov post is summer, which means that you can cook various lean dishes from vegetables. For example, ajapsandal is very popular in Transcaucasia. This is a vegetable stew, which turns out to be very tasty, spicy, which will especially appeal to those who love savory dishes. In fasting, stew can be served as an independent dish, and on any other day - as a side dish for meat.
Ingredients:
- tomatoes;
- eggplant;
- carrot;
- potato;
- Bell pepper;
- hot chilli pepper;
- garlic;
- onion;
- cilantro and basil;
- vegetable oil;
- sugar;
- salt and black pepper.
Step by step recipe:
Cut the blue ones into 2-3 cm pieces, put them in a bowl, sprinkle with salt, mix well and leave for 10-15 minutes
At this time, we will prepare other vegetables. Tomatoes need to be peeled. To do this, make incisions on the fruits, pour boiling water for a couple of minutes
Cut the peeled potato tubers into the same pieces as the eggplants
- Drain the hot water from the tomatoes, pour in cold water and let them stand for another minute.
- Cut the carrots into slices 5 mm thick.
We peel off the peel from the tomatoes, cut out the stalks and cut into large pieces
Cut the onion and bell peppers into large cubes
- Cut hot pepper into small strips, chop the garlic.
- We cut all the greens, rinse the eggplants under cold water, squeeze out excess moisture and go to the stove.
In a deep saucepan with a thick bottom, heat the oil and fry all the vegetables separately over high heat. First, potatoes and eggplants until golden, then onions with the addition of carrots, bell peppers, and half of the garlic and hot pepper
- As soon as the garlic gives off flavor, add the tomatoes, stir and return the eggplants and potatoes to the stewpan.
- Next, pour the remaining garlic with hot pepper, herbs, add sugar, salt with black pepper to taste. We mix everything.
Simmer the stew over medium heat, covered for no more than 15 minutes, so that the vegetables do not lose their shape and turn into caviar. Before serving, the dish should be well infused, for at least an hour
Instead of basil and cilantro, you can use parsley, and ground coriander as an additional spice.

We use a sweet variety of carrots for baking. In addition to nuts, raisins and any other dried fruits can be added to the dough.
It is not necessary for the laity to strictly follow the dietary calendar of Petrov Lent in 2022: for example, on dry-eating days you can eat, but the food should be simple and modest. The main thing in fasting is to pay attention to the soul, because its basis is repentance, humility, prayer and reading of spiritual books.
