Are you constantly tired at work or at home? In this case, do not deny yourself a piece of dark chocolate, scientists advise. According to British experts, even small portions of the treat can alleviate chronic fatigue syndrome.
The fact is that dark chocolate is rich in chemical compounds that improve signal transmission in the brain. The study by scientists from Hull University and Hull York School of Medicine led by Professor Steve Atkin is the first to prove the effectiveness of chocolate in patients with severe chronic fatigue syndrome, writes The Telegraph.
Chronic fatigue syndrome, according to doctors, affects at least 0.1% of the world's population and almost 1% of residents of large cities. The nature of the disease has not yet been fully understood. However, the viral theory of the disease looks most plausible. Typically, the disease affects people between the ages of 18 and 50. Women are affected twice as often as men.
Experts conducted an experiment in which ten patients with the most severe forms of chronic fatigue syndrome took part.
All subjects were asked to eat only half a bar of dark chocolate with a cocoa content of at least 55% daily for eight weeks - 15 g three times a day. Then they took a two-week break to resume "chocolate therapy", but with less saturated varieties, mainly milk chocolate.
After the first two months of treatment with dark chocolate, absolutely all participants in the experiment reported an improvement in their well-being. Their attacks of headaches and muscle pains decreased, depressive thoughts disappeared. Milk chocolate did not give noticeable results: after several weeks of ingestion, the subjects did not notice any changes in their condition.
