Breast cancer is one of the most dangerous female diseases. The special insidiousness of the disease is that specialists still do not understand the true causes of its occurrence. According to the prevailing opinion among experts, severe stress, hormonal imbalances can become provoking factors, and heredity plays an important role. But Italian scientists are confident that the risk of developing cancer can be significantly reduced. The main thing is to adhere to a healthy lifestyle.

Oncology expert at the University of Milan, Carlo La Vecchia, said it was time to focus on lifestyle as a factor in women's health. Patients should pay more attention to diet and exercise.

In his opinion, a third of women in Western countries suffering from breast cancer could avoid the disease if they ate less and exercised more.

In 2008 alone, 421,000 women in Europe were diagnosed with breast cancer. Almost a quarter of them died. In the United States, 190,000 new cases and 40,000 deaths were recorded during the same period.

According to British researchers, for every eighth inhabitant of Europe there is a risk of developing cancer, and among obese women, the chance of getting sick is 60% higher than the average. The reason for this is the hormone estrogen, which is produced by adipose tissue. However, this risk can be reduced by converting fat into muscle.

The American Cancer Society recommends 45 to 60 minutes of exercise, five days a week, for breast cancer prevention.

A study by the Women's Health Initiative shows that walking two hours a week reduces breast cancer risk by 18%.
