Lauren McCulloug, a specialist at the University of North Carolina's School of Global Health at Chapel Hill, USA, and her colleagues have found a link between irregular physical activity at various points in life and the risk of breast cancer.
The study was carried out with the participation of 1504 women who had already been diagnosed with the disease (233 - with a non-invasive form and 1.271 thousand - with an invasive form), and 1555 women without an oncological diagnosis, aged 20 to 98 years.
In the course of analyzing the data, experts found that the risk of developing oncology in women who engaged in physical exercise both during the reproductive period and after menopause is noticeably lower. In particular, women who spend more than 10 hours a week in the gym had an approximately 30% reduction in risk, RIA Novosti writes.
According to scientists, exercise reduces the risk of forms of breast cancer associated with hormone receptors, the most common types of cancer among American women.
At the same time, when the researchers looked at the combined effects of exercise, weight gain and body size, they found that even active women who gained significant weight, especially after menopause, had an increased risk of developing breast cancer. This means that if a lady does not control her weight, then all the positive effects of exercise in terms of reducing the risk of developing cancer are nullified.
