Stereotypes like “there should be a lot of a good person” or “fat people are usually good-natured” have a real basis. As Japanese scientists have found, friendly and sociable people are really inclined to be overweight, in contrast to the withdrawn and constantly worried about something.

The study was conducted in northeastern Japan. Scientists measured the physical parameters of more than 30 thousand people between the ages of 40 and 64 years and calculated for each of them the body mass index (BMI), which is determined by dividing a person's body weight (in kg) by the squared value of his height (in meters) … In addition, with the help of psychological tests, they studied the character of the volunteers and their habits.

It turned out that people with a BMI over 25, that is, overweight, are usually open-minded. Extroverted men are 1.73 times more likely to be overweight than introverts. For the fair sex, this ratio is 1.53. At the same time, people who are prone to frequent nervous experiences are two times more likely than calm and balanced people to have a BMI on average of about 18.5, that is, less than the norm.

“These findings may be key to developing more effective responses to overweight, obesity or excess thinness,” one of the study's leaders, Professor Kakizaki, told reporters.

Earlier, British doctors published a report according to which there is a direct link between weight and human life expectancy. The key factor is the same body mass index (BMI). Patients who have this figure as high as 30 kilograms per square meter die on average nine years earlier than their slimmer peers. If the BMI is more than 45, the life expectancy of a person (who in this case can already be called sick) is reduced by 13 years. For comparison, such a bad habit as smoking takes a maximum of ten years.
