The rapid development of social networks did not go unnoticed by scientists. Scottish psychologists have decided to find out how spending time on Facebook and Twitter can affect mental capacity. And suddenly they came to two different conclusions.
As it turned out, a person who spends time on the social network Facebook, noted the development of a key element of intelligence, while the use of Twitter can lead to the opposite effect.
Dr. Tracy Alloway of the University of Stirling in Scotland believes war video games and Sudoku can do the same thing as chatting on Facebook. But exchanging short text messages, participating in microblogging on Twitter, as well as watching YouTube videos, most likely weaken the so-called working memory.
Working memory is the ability to remember information and use it. In particular, it is necessary to use working memory during a job interview in order to correctly answer the questions asked.
“I'm not going to argue that planning and strategy games are good for improving social skills, but they really force you to use your working memory,” said Dr. Alloway. "You need to keep in mind the steps you took earlier and plan the actions that you are just about to take."
In her opinion, working memory can also be trained by solving Sudoku or chatting with friends on Facebook. However, instant messaging on Twitter or YouTube does not help its development.
“On Twitter, you get an endless stream of information, but it is very compressed,” explains the expert. - You are not required to process this information. Your attention is weakened, the brain is not involved, and the process of establishing connections between neurons does not take place."
