The long-awaited film Alice in Wonderland, directed by Tim Burton (Sweeney Todd, Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Corpse Bride, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), premiered. There is not so much left of the good old Lewis Carroll tale in the film. Alice herself (Mia Wasikowska) has grown a lot. Now she is 19. And a new turn is outlined in the girl's life. At a sumptuous reception, the rich son of Lord and Lady Ascot Hamish makes Alice a marriage proposal … But, without giving an answer, Alice escapes. She sees a white rabbit on the lawn, follows him and disappears into the rabbit hole. After landing in a strange room, Alice finds her way to a fantastic Dungeon. This is the same world in which she once visited as a child, but about which she remembers almost nothing. There she meets the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp), the Cheshire Cat, the beautiful White Queen (Anne Hatway) and her evil older sister, the Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter), ruler of the Dungeon. Ever since the Red Queen reigned, the inhabitants of the magical land have suffered. They think that with the arrival of Alice in the underground Wonderland, a new joyful life will begin …

All this is absolutely frivolous, says Tim Burton. "The point of our attempt was to take the very idea of the book and give it a form that does not follow the original word for word, but preserves its spirit."
