Hollywood star Catherine Zeta-Jones received a pleasant surprise the day before. As it became known, the actress was awarded the third most important degree of the Order of the British Empire, becoming the Commander of the Order (CBE). The unveiling of the traditional list of laureates of UK government awards is timed to coincide with the official birthday of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain, which is celebrated today, June 12.

A native of Wales, 40-year-old Katherine began her career in local television, but eventually managed to achieve huge success in Hollywood. Recall that in 2003 she received an Oscar in the nomination for Best Supporting Actress for the film Chicago. For the past ten years, the spectacular brunette has lived mainly in the United States with her husband, Michael Douglas.

Upon learning of the award of the honorary title, the actress was shocked. “As a British citizen, I feel an extraordinary pride that both overwhelms me and makes me remember modesty. My mom and dad are delighted to the point of madness, - admitted Catherine.

Also, about a thousand more Britons received awards on behalf of Her Majesty for their social activities. Among them are Formula 1 driver David Coulthard, Vancouver's only British Winter Olympics champion Amy Williams and Jimmy Choo founder Tamara Mellon.

The awards are not awarded by the queen herself, the list is drawn up on her behalf by the office of the British government, but the award ceremonies are held at Buckingham Palace, RIA Novosti notes.

The awarding ceremonies of the medals themselves will take place over the coming months with the participation of small groups of laureates. Usually the award is given by either Elizabeth II or her son, Prince of Wales Charles.
