Human scent is as unique as fingerprints. Until now, this fact has not been scientifically confirmed. Now all the evidence is there, and, perhaps, soon forensic scientists will identify criminals not by "fingers", but by chemical compounds, traces of which remain in the air.

The study, conducted by Dustin Penn of the Konrad Lorenz Institute in Vienna, proceeded as follows. To begin with, scientists divided the smells of people by gender, defining the differences between "female" and "male" smells. The differences turned out to be very significant. Scientists then extracted thousands of volatile compounds from human sweat, urine and saliva and studied them using chromatography and mass spectrometry. The biggest difference was in the smell of sweat. The study concluded that, contrary to popular belief, the smell of sweat has little to do with what a person eats.

The smell of a person can change over time, but experts have identified about 400 "odorous" components in the participants, which are constantly present in the secretions. It is by them that you can distinguish people from each other.

The researchers examined samples of underarm sweat, urine, and saliva from 197 participants. Analyzes were taken from each of them 5 times within 10 weeks.

One of the important differences between the smells of men and women is in the so-called pheromones. Scientists discovered them a long time ago and believe that these substances contribute to the emergence of sympathy between people of different sexes.

So, a substance called androstenol, present in a man's sweat, has a pungent musky odor that is sexually attracted to women. When androstenol is oxidized, androstenone is formed, the smell of which causes a rather negative reaction in most women. But those women who are experiencing ovulation like it. The secretion of the vaginal glands contains substances called copulin. As a result of control experiments in which men inhaled this substance, it was found that copulins increase the sexual attractiveness of a woman in the eyes of a man. And another fact: men react more positively to a woman's smell at the time when she is ovulating.
