What role do pheromones play in the relationship between opposite sexes? Scientists have not yet come to an unambiguous opinion. Some experts believe that specific substances secreted by the human body often cause a much stronger sexual response in the opposite sex than attractive appearance. Others believe that the role attributed to pheromones is grossly exaggerated. Meanwhile, American neuroscientist Leslie Vosshall discovered that everyone perceives amber pheromones differently.

Leslie Vosshall, a molecular neuroscientist at Rockefeller University in New York, studied the effects of the male pheromone androstenone on women. It turned out that each of us reacts differently to the amber of this pheromone. For some ladies, androstenone reminds of … urine, for others - vanilla, and for others it does not smell at all.

True, there are not so many women from the first category in the world - only 5%, but Vosshall, by her own admission, belongs to them. “In my nose, androstenone produces the same sensations as the armpits of a young man who ran for a hundred days and never washed himself,” the researcher told LiveScience in an interview.

According to Vosshall, it's all about the so-called OR7D4 odor gene: it is from its modification that the perception of androstenone depends. "People who carry different variations of this receptor gene perceive the smell of pheromone in different ways," - says the author of the study.

According to her, it was possible to find out as a result of a relatively small experiment: scientists gave almost 400 women to smell and evaluate 66 different chemical compounds, among which was androstenone, after which blood tests were taken from the volunteers. It turned out that women with the simplest form of OR7D4 described this pheromone as "nauseous", while in others, the modification of the gene turned out to be a little complicated.

The researcher does not exclude that there are other variations of the odor gene, thanks to which a much more diverse perception of androstenone is possible, writes the Free Press. Be that as it may, and this substance, according to scientists, is one of the most powerful pheromones, affecting the subconscious and instincts of a woman, inherent in her body by nature itself.
