How often do you exercise outdoors? The question is quite serious, especially for women. American cardiologists claim that walking can significantly reduce the risk of stroke. And if you walk quickly enough during walks, the effect will only increase.
The American Heart Association presented the results of a study in which scientists studied how walking reduces the likelihood of hemorrhagic or ischemic stroke. In total, the researchers collected data on 39,315 American women working in the health care sector. Their average age was 54 years, and the majority turned out to be white-skinned.
In general, physical activity reduces the risk of stroke by 25-30%, doctors say. According to cardiologists, an adult should be moderately stressed for at least 150 minutes a week, or spend at least 75 minutes on vigorous work.
Every two to three years, women reported how often over the past year they walked, ran, rode a bicycle, actively danced, played tennis, spent time on exercise machines, did aerobics, yoga - all types of physical activity were taken into account, except for housekeeping and professional activities. Participants in the study also reported at what pace they usually walk: walking (up to 2 miles per hour, or up to 3.2 km / h), normal (up to 4.8 km / h), brisk (up to 6.4 km / h) or superfast (over 6.4 km / h).
During 11, 9 years of the study, 579 women had a stroke, of which 473 ischemic, 102 hemorrhagic and four of an unknown type, Infox.ru reports.
It turned out that if you walk for at least two hours a week, then the likelihood of any type of stroke is reduced by 30%. And if the step speed is not less than 4.8 km / h, then ischemic or hemorrhagic strokes occur 37% less often.
