Most Russians renovate their kitchens to eliminate clutter, a recent poll shows. This goal, when undertaking renovations, was guided by 69% of homeowners. Nearly a third of those surveyed in the Houzz Kitchen Trends 2018 survey lean towards beige, contemporary style (27% to 31% depending on age), ceramic tiles (34%) and linoleum (31%). More than half of the respondents seek help from professionals (55%) and change their kitchen style (63%). For everyone who works on the interior on their own or wants to more accurately convey their wishes to technical specialists and designers, Kleo.ru lists common and annoying mistakes and learned how to solve them.

1. Work more boldly with color

In the harsh Russian realities, a "light" kitchen seems to be the right option - the bad weather outside the window is smoothed out by milky and sandy shades. Interiors become similar: according to the study, most often in kitchens there are beige walls (31%) and floors (17%), white cabinets (20%) and gray countertops (19%). Still hesitating for a bright interior? Start small: shelves and tables are easy to replace, walls can be repainted without touching everything else.

2. Choose a convenient location for your sink

While you are washing the dishes in the corner, at least three drawers of cupboards become inaccessible - both to you and your colleagues in the kitchen. You can make sacrifices for the sake of the window, but in any other situation, it is worth installing the sink in a more spacious place.

3. Consider storage systems and do not overdo it with open shelving

The absolute "transparency" of the kitchen is good only at first glance. Imagine dusting dozens of containers and shelves, and removing everything from the countertop every time you want to clean it. If you can hide everything in the closet, right down to the toaster, there will be less work.

4. Remember work surfaces

Having located the main elements of the kitchen, clarify the situation with small household appliances: if there is almost no space left, blenders and microwave ovens can take up the only free areas - and there will be nowhere to cook.

5. Prefer pull-out shelves over conventional

One of the main ways to eliminate clutter, which is aimed at rework. With such a cabinet arrangement, you will have everything in sight.

6. Calculate distances

If the sink, stove and refrigerator are too far apart, you will have to spin around the kitchen with food in hand. At the same time, for obvious reasons, the stove should not be placed close to the refrigerator.

7. Equip multiple light sources

“To avoid the cold and uncomfortable atmosphere, complement the overhead lighting with spotlights - near the stove and other work surfaces - as well as decorative lighting that will emphasize the design,” advises Elena Ambrosimova, editor-in-chief of Houzz. "One chandelier won't be enough here."

Russians, however, prefer this type of lighting. A chandelier was chosen by 48% of respondents who have already made a renovation, who were doing it at the time of the survey, or who were preparing to renovate their kitchen within three months. Built-in and pendant lights are also popular - 34% and 28% of respondents decided to install them.

8. Don't overdo it with steel

There is always a danger that the kitchen will become lifeless - like a restaurant at best. To prevent this, try bringing life to your kitchen with natural materials and plants. Wood and greenery will make the room more breathable and less sterile.

9. Don't forget about the trash

It is better to hide large baskets with a hinged lid and any other structures inside the cabinets. Built-in garbage storage systems, a regular bucket inside a drawer - anything, just not in sight.

10. Find a place for the sockets

Lack of outlets is an annoying detail that can ruin any kitchen. Make sure that there is where to stick a kettle, mixer, blender, TV, smartphone and other equipment - and hide additional sockets inside the countertop, cabinet or chandelier.
