Humorists are loved, but few have been quoted for years. Roman Kartsev is one of these few. Who ever heard his monologue"

Roman Kartsev was born on May 20, 1939 in the city of Odessa, and in his youth worked as a sewing machine adjuster at the Odessa factory "Avangard".

In 1962, he left Odessa and, together with his constant partner and friend Viktor Ilchenko, came to Arkady Raikin at the Leningrad Theater of Miniatures. There they went through an acting school and there they became famous, becoming laureates of the All-Union contest of pop artists in 1969. It was during the period of work in the theater of Arkady Raikin that the creative community of Mikhail Zhvanetsky, Roman Kartsev and Viktor Ilchenko developed.

Since 1988, Roman Kartsev has been working at the Moscow Theater of Miniatures. In 1988 the play "Bird Flight" was staged together with director Mark Rozovsky, in 1989 - "Political Cabaret" with director E. Lansky. This performance was the last one performed together with Viktor Ilchenko. After Ilchenko's death in 1992, the renowned duo ceased to exist.

In total, according to rough estimates, R. Kartsev and V. Ilchenko played more than 300 miniatures and monologues by M. Zhvanetsky!

At the Moscow Theater School of Contemporary Play Kartsev played several performances based on the works of Zhvanetsky: "My Odessa", "Benefit", "An elderly tomboy" (to the 60th anniversary of R. Kartsev, director E. Livitin), "Selected", play by S. Altova "Waiting room".

Roman Kartsev played many memorable movie roles. For the first time on the screen, Roman Kartsev appeared together with Viktor Ilchenko in the children's television movie "The Magic Voice of Jelsomino". Kartsev played there a school teacher. He listed the names of the students - these were, in fact, the only words for the role. But when he once again proceeded to this list, the audience died with laughter. The amazing ability of the actor to seriously say some platitudes or to keep quiet in a funny way delights both the audience and the stage partners. He can just go to the microphone and the audience will laugh and applaud him! Having successfully performed the role of Shvonder in Heart of a Dog, Roman Kartsev became popular among filmmakers as well. It is often removed by Eldar Ryazanov ("Promised Heaven", "Old Nags").

"Roman Kartsev's Benefit" is dedicated to the 65th anniversary of the actor. The program of the evening includes monologues of past years, new, yet unfamiliar numbers. The concert will consist of several blocks: a block dedicated to Odessa, a block of romantic monologues, a block dedicated to Kartsev's partner and friend Viktor Ilchenko. Kartsev himself carefully selects monologues for his performance, but assures that he will not read many famous works: "Both me and the viewer are already tired of it," the actor says.

Roman Kartsev has the title of Honored Artist of the Russian Federation, People's Artist of the Russian Federation, honorary citizen of the city of Odessa, laureate of the festival of humor "Golden Ostap" (St. Petersburg). In addition, in 2003 he received the prize of the competition "Odessa Citizen of the Year 2003" in the category "Legend of Odessa".
