From self-destruction to retribution

About this in the crime thriller "Time of Retribution" (2018), reviews and reviews of the film tell about the fate of a woman detective, prone to self-destruction (hence the original name "Destroyer", translated from English - "destroyer") and living for many years with a sense of guilt. The release date of the picture in Russian cinemas is March 14, 2019. The drama was nominated for a Golden Globe Award.

Past and future - two contradictions

The action of the picture takes place at once in two realities - in different time periods: in modern Los Angeles and in a city 17 years ago. The viewer is shown the main character Erin Bell either fresh, young and glowing from the inside, or with a dull look, an unhealthy complexion, sunken cheeks and age spots. Erin from the past is a charismatic and purposeful girl who makes mistakes, but wants to fix them. Erin today is a life-weary and withdrawn policewoman trying to heal the wounds she received many years ago.

Brief synopsis: Erin and her partner infiltrate a criminal gang and do not notice how they fall in love with each other. Criminals are secretly preparing a special operation to rob a bank, and Erin also wants to be in a share, because money is never superfluous. The undercover cops carefully think over their actions and the escape plan, but something goes wrong, and Erin's beloved dies in a shootout, and the fault lies entirely with her. This day radically changes the life of a young woman: you have to raise a child alone, and you still need to live somehow, dissolving problems in alcohol and drugs.

The heroine is persistently trying to understand herself and her past. The viewer finds himself inside the criminal world, into which Erin plunges, and amidst the structure of the narrative full of unexpected turns. A woman is trying to determine what is real in her inner world, and what is false, what memories are burdensome and cause feelings of guilt. After all, it is precisely such states that destroy a person, plunging him to the bottom of his own consciousness, from where it can be more difficult to get out than to cope with addictions.

Erin's goal is to find the leader of the criminal gang Silas, who has returned to the city, and avenge the death of his partner, and at the same time for many years of torment and mental pain

Reincarnation of Nicole Kidman

According to the director of the film, Karin Kusama, the script of the film was written over several years, the plot twists and the line of events were carefully thought out, various topics and hypotheses were considered. And in the end it was decided to make the woman the main character of such a story. The idea seemed promising to filmmakers - and so Erin Bal appeared.

The image of the heroine turned out to be "eerily" believable, because the woman has a difficult life experience and a difficult path. She tries to rethink the past, understand how to live further, and establish a relationship with a problematic teenage daughter, which does not work out at all. Many of Erin's failures will seem very close, familiar and understandable.

The casting of the actress for the main role ended almost before it began, because Nicole Kidman almost immediately got in touch with the producers of Time of Vengeance, Fred Berger, Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi.

The actress wanted to work in the directorial project of Karin Kusama: “I followed Karin's career, and I was interested in her approach to the material. It was important for me to make sure that she gives herself to this project without a trace and treats her work with passion."

As Nicole admits, in order to look convincing in the frame and be organic with Erin's image, she spent a long time learning to hold firearms in her hands. The process of immersion in this role was very difficult, because the heroine is fundamentally different from Kidman, both physically and emotionally.

On the screen, the actress is still recognizable, but one cannot fail to notice monstrous metamorphoses: dry and old skin reflects neglect of health and a tendency to self-destruction, gait and facial expressions convey the whole weight of the past and the burden of destructive experience that Erin went through.

The popular make-up artist Bill Corso was responsible for the new look of Kidman, who at the beginning of almost every shooting day applied a mask of age wrinkles, age spots and plastic overlays to the actress's face for the effect of "bags under the eyes". Then there were yellowed teeth, a broken nose and sun-dried hair.

The film "Time of Vengeance" (2018) will be of interest to a wide audience, producer Fred Berger does not worry about viewer reviews and reviews from critics, because the dynamic action will attract viewers of both sexes and touch the strings of everyone's soul. Also, one cannot fail to note the high professionalism of the director - this is the selection of actors, and the transfer of states and experiences through the screen, and the selected locations. This picture is about a woman who, despite the imperfections and mistakes of the past, managed to get even with her enemies, admit victories and defeats, and eventually accept her fate.
