The institution of marriage is going through hard times. Some couples fundamentally refuse to use a stamp in their passports, some simply do not bother with paperwork. Senator Anton Belyakov came up with an initiative to introduce amendments to the Family Code of the Russian Federation, according to which unregistered relations between a man and a woman are equated to an official marriage after five years of living together.

The parliamentarian proposes to supplement the code with the concept of "actual marriage". In fact, it is “not a duly registered union of a man and a woman living together and leading a common household. Signs of a de facto marriage relationship are: cohabitation for five years; cohabitation for two years and the presence of a common child (common children)."

According to Belyakov, many Russians not only refuse to register a relationship, but do not even share the concept of an unregistered marriage and an official marriage.

"However, from the point of view of the law, the so-called cohabitation is not recognized and does not give rise to any legal consequences, which puts the members of such a union in a very vulnerable position."

The senator specified that the same requirements will be imposed on those in actual marital relations as for persons planning to register a marriage: reaching marriageable age, not being in another marriage and not being close relatives.
