Robert De Niro has separated from his wife, Grace Hightower, after more than twenty years of marriage. A source close to the couple told PEOPLE that they are already living apart.

“Sometimes things just don't go as we would like,” the source said.

Robert and Grace got married in 1997. They have two children: Eliot, 20, and Helen Grace, 6. This is not the first time the couple have broken up. De Niro already filed for divorce in 1999 and was very worried about how his son would live. Then the couple managed to figure everything out and avoid divorce. In November 2004, they renewed their marriage vows in front of guests including Martin Scorsese, Meryl Streep, Ben Stiller and others.

At various times, Robert laughed off questions about the problems in his marriage, saying that "this time it should definitely work out." In June, the couple attended the 72nd Tony Awards red carpet together in New York.
