For a tourist from South America, a walk around New York ended with a visit to the hospital: he went hungry for five days and slept on the street, embarrassed to ask for directions to his home, writes Lenta.ru.

32-year-old Damon Mootoo, who came to visit relatives, went for a walk around the city on Wednesday, January 17th. After about 15 minutes I realized that I was lost and could not remember the way to my brother's house. The situation was further complicated by the fact that Mutu did not take any documents or money with him.

“I went from house to house to see if I recognized the house,” says Mr. Mutu. When it got dark and it started snowing, the tourist panicked. "I started to pray. I thought, 'I can't believe I'm lost."

According to him, he was afraid to ask for directions from passers-by, as he had heard that New York is a very dangerous city. Plus, everyone looked very busy. The tourist was also wary of police officers, fearing detention for lack of documents.

As a result, he spent several nights on the street in abandoned cars and old garages. Instead of a blanket, he used a Christmas tree thrown away by someone. He asked people for water, but hesitated to ask for food. He says that in the end he tried to ask several people for help, but no one did anything.

On the fifth day, thirsty, Mutu tried to turn on the service water tap and was found doing the job by New Yorker Michael Bharath. The compassionate American fed the newly minted homeless person, gave him water and, finding an address in his clothes, took the poor fellow home. It turned out that the relatives of a resident of the American province lived five minutes from the places where he wandered.

"I went from house to house to see if I recognized the house."

By this time, the Mutu family had long ago declared their guest on the wanted list, his photo was even shown on local television. He himself was also delighted to meet, but said that he was going to get home to South America as soon as possible.

It is worth noting that during Mutu's wanderings around New York, it periodically snowed in the city, and at night the temperature dropped below zero.
