Do you often find yourself in stressful situations? Then run to the park or out of town. And it is preferable where the lawn mowing is carried out. According to Australian scientists, breathing in the smell of freshly cut grass makes us more resistant to stress.

Scientists have found substances in freshly cut grass that affect certain parts of the brain. They promote feelings of well-being and relaxation, and may help combat stress and thought disorders in old age.

Research by Lavidis and colleagues has shown that chemicals from freshly cut grass directly affect the amygdala and hippocampus, the brain structures responsible for shaping emotions and regulating behavior in stressful situations. With chronic stress in the hippocampus, the number of connections between nerve cells decreases, which leads to memory impairments.

However, scientists have already proposed an alternative to the lawn mower for the overly busy residents of gas-polluted metropolitan areas. Based on the substances contained in herbs, they created a pharmacologically active flavoring agent.

Critics unanimously say that the potential of anti-stress products is really very large, and it is possible that in the near future almost all modern brands will acquire such useful new products.

Nick Lavidis from the University of Queensland in Brisbane came up with the idea to create such a fragrance during a trip to the American Yosemite National Park.

Based on three substances released when cutting grass, scientists have created a fragrance called Serenascent. The development process took seven years. Experiments in mice have shown that the scent of this flavor prevents chronic stress-induced damage to the hippocampus.
