BAFTA is the equivalent of the Academy Award in Foggy Albion. This festival is also called the harbinger of "Oscar" - no luck at BAFTA, there is a chance in Hollywood. Last year, two major British Film Festival awards - for Best Actress and Actor - went to the United States, to Bill Murray and Scarett Johansson for Lost in Translation. This year the British are betting "on their own", and not only at BAFTA, but also at the subsequent Oscars.

British-born world star Kate Winslet has been nominated for a BAFTA twice in the same category for her roles in FairyLand and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. An unprecedented event! She is competing with British Imelda Staunton ("Vera Drake"), who has already received "best actress" at the Venice Film Festival, Ziyi Zang ("House of the Flying Daggers") and Charlize Theron ("Monster").

It is curious that both of Kate Winslet's partners on the set also ended up in the main male nomination: Jim Carrey (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) and Johnny Depp (Fairyland) will compete for the title of "Best Actor" each with a friend, and also with Leonardo DiCaprio ("The Aviator").

From the nomination "Supporting Actor" can be noted Jamie Fox ("Accomplice") and Rodrigo de la Serna ("Motorcycle Diaries").

Best Supporting Actress nominated Britons Julie Christie (Fairyland) and Heather Craney (Vera Drake), who are in serious competition Cate Blanchett (Aviator) and Meryl Streep, The Manchurian Nominee.

On the other hand, the nominees for the Best Picture award included such hits of the world box office, but of British production as Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azbakan (which is considered the darkest episode in the film version of J. K. Rowling's novel), Fairyland (about a boy, which served as the inspiration for the creation of the story of Peter Pan) and the debut of Matthew Vaughn "Puff Pie" (featuring the popular beauty Cienna Miller). The controversial British drama about clandestine abortions in the 1950s, "Vera Drake", was nominated for as many as 10 times in the festival's nominations.

The BAFTA ceremony will take place on 12 February. Read the detailed report on Cleo.
