Peter's fast is one of the summer fasts established in Orthodoxy. This is an important event that requires a little preparation. Therefore, you need to know in advance what date the post will begin and end in 2018.

Some interesting facts

This event is timed to the Apostles Peter and Paul, which is why the fast has two more names - Apostolic and Peter and Paul. At this time, the memory of the disciples of Jesus Christ, their faith, compassion and desire to carry the word of God into the world is honored.

The summer fast cannot be called too strict, since believers are allowed to eat fish on some days. And all due to the fact that Peter was born in the family of a fisherman and over time they began to call him the patron saint of fishermen.

But on Wednesdays and Fridays, as was always the case, you have to give up this food too - only raw foods without oil and salt are allowed.

The history of the introduction of the Peter and Paul post

Many generations of people begin to fast in the summer, as it was said in the "Apostolic Tradition", which was written in the 3rd century by Saint Hippolytus of Rome.

However, initially the summer fast was in no way connected with the names of Peter and Paul and had a different name - Pentecost. He made it possible to clear the soul and thoughts of anger to those people who, for some reason, were not able to observe Great Lent.

However, over time, everything has changed. At the beginning of the 4th century, the Day of the Apostles Peter and Paul earned the status of one of the most revered and beloved Christian holidays.

In honor of this, the post in June began to be called Petrovsky. Believers began to perceive it as an important part of the preparation for the day of remembrance of the holy apostles.

When is the beginning

To find out what date Peter's Lent will begin in 2018, you need to count seven days from Monday, which follows immediately after Trinity, the greatest Christian holiday. And finding out the end date of the post, in fact, is even easier.

After all, as mentioned earlier, the Peter and Paul Fast is a preparation for celebrating the Day of Peter and Paul, which is always celebrated on July 12. So the believers finish fasting on this very day.

It remains only to clarify the details: this year Trinity was celebrated on May 27, which means that Peter's fast will start on Monday 4 June and will last exactly 38 days … In general, a summer fast can last no less than 8 and no more than 42 days.

Unchanging traditions

The first challenge in fasting is to limit (or even eliminate) certain foods. Therefore, most of the traditions that have developed over many decades are associated precisely with cooking.

For example, on the days of the memory of the saints, which fall on fasting, each housewife had to bake a fishmonger - a pie made of whole peeled fish, which was “wrapped” and baked in dough.

In addition, during the Petrov Lent, it was customary to cook the following meatless dishes:

  • cold cabbage soup;
  • okroshka;
  • soup with sour kvass.

These dishes were preferably prepared on Wednesdays and Fridays, when the strictest fasting rules were observed.

Church canons say that from the beginning of the summer fast until July 12, there is a ban on dairy products, meat and eggs.

Of course, it is strongly recommended to give up alcoholic beverages, tobacco smoking and other bad habits during this period.

If we talk about folk traditions, then in Petrov Lent one should not:

  • pick up needles;
  • do handicrafts, as this can attract bad news to life;
  • get a haircut so as not to cut off luck and personal happiness;
  • lend so that it does not return twice.

A few days before July 12, everyone who cared about their well-being put things in order in the house - they got rid of everything that was broken, broken and unnecessary. After all, it is customary to celebrate holidays in a clean home and with bright thoughts.

Is it possible to get married in Petrov post

Church ministers have a negative attitude towards weddings and do not agree to marry newlyweds. There are several good reasons for this:

  1. Food restrictions. Any celebration presupposes the presence of hearty dishes, a large amount of meat and alcoholic beverages. Therefore, it is unlikely that anyone will have the strength to remain an "obedient Christian" at a wedding.
  2. Prohibition of an idle lifestyle … A believer in the days of fasting should know his soul, forgive offenses and help others, refusing to have fun and noisy festivities.
  3. Popular signs warn that the one who marries in the Peter and Paul post will not build a strong family … From the first year of marriage, newlyweds are likely to be mired in quarrels, scandals and mutual reproaches. So it’s better to wait and sign at another, more appropriate period.

Now you know exactly what date will start and when Peter Lent will end in 2018. There is still a little time to mentally prepare for it, think over all your actions and get rid of forbidden food.

All this is needed in order to know oneself, become a little closer to God and better understand the pain and suffering of other people.
