Are you dreaming of a baby, but the long-awaited pregnancy will never come? If this is the case, try limiting your coffee intake. One of the most popular stimulants in the world, caffeine can have a marked effect on fertility, researchers at the University of Nevada have found.
A study of 9,000 women found that drinking more than four cups of coffee a day reduced the chances of conception by about a quarter. The fact is that caffeine reduces the activity of the muscles in the fallopian tubes, through which the egg from the ovary enters the uterus, where fertilization takes place.
Little is known about how the eggs manage to move. It is believed that they are helped in this by small, hair-like processes called cilia, with the help of muscle contractions of the fallopian tubes.
Caffeine, on the other hand, neutralizes the action of special cells that stimulate these contractions, as a result of which the egg loses its ability to move.
Previously, scientists from the Netherlands, conducting a study of the lifestyle and diet of almost 10 thousand women who have resorted to in vitro fertilization, found that drinking four or more cups of coffee, strong tea or other caffeinated drinks reduces the likelihood of conception by 26%. Drinking alcoholic beverages three times a week has about the same effect.
An even more significant negative role was played by a woman's overweight, as well as smoking. The researchers even gave an illustrative example: an overweight 36-year-old woman who had several IVF treatments, smoked, had four cups of coffee a day and alcohol three times a week had a 5% risk of conceiving a child naturally. With a normal weight and no other three risk factors, the same woman has a 15% chance of getting pregnant.
