He decided to become an actor as a child. “It happened when I watched in the children's theater a play based on Sergei Vladimirovich Mikhalkov's play“A Special Assignment”. I believed everything that happened on stage. I was sure that these are not adult actresses who play children, but real boys and girls. And there is not a props around, but a real fence, a real house. It was life. And this attitude to the theater has remained forever,”said Valentin Iosifovich.

However, Gaft was silent about his plans for the time being. Secretly, he applied directly to the Shchukin School and the Moscow Art Theater School. I entered the last one on the first try, passing the exam with excellent marks. He made his film debut in 1956 (the film "Murder on Dante Street"), a year later he made his debut on the stage of the Mossovet Theater. Since 1969 he has been performing on the stage of the Sovremennik Theater.

The artist has more than a hundred roles. Many films with his participation are considered classics of Soviet cinema: "Garage", "Sorcerers", "Thieves in law".

At the same time, Valentin Iosifovich considers himself, first of all, a theatrical actor. “Scene and life are two different things,” says Gaft. - Alexander Vertinsky almost smeared his face with chalk in order to hide behind a mask. An artist on stage is a reincarnation, but in life he is a completely different person. But everything is interconnected: if you commit indecent acts in life, then it is reflected in the way you play."

Now the artist is working on his own play "The City is Far Behind". “I think that each generation lives for the next. Life gives a person happiness and rewards him for the fact that he, despite all the difficulties of life, remains a person,”emphasizes Valentin Iosifovich.
