Most Hollywood stars are happy to talk about politics and even cobble together their own parties. But it looks like actor Robert DeNiro may be persona non grata at political events for a while. The other day, a celebrity allowed herself a joke, which turned out to be offensive.

Michelle Obama hosted an event organized by Michelle Obama to raise funds for her husband's election campaign the night before in a New York restaurant. Representatives of show business were invited to the meeting, as is customary. Including singer Beyonce and Robert De Niro.

De Niro got the role of the host of the event, along with Mrs. Obama. But during one of the heartfelt speeches, the actor overdid it.

The Hollywood actor's joke was not appreciated in the camp of another US presidential candidate. Newt Gingrich's office found De Niro's words racist and demanded an apology from Barack Obama, since the Hollywood actor is his supporter, NEWSru.com notes.

“Callista Gingrich, Karen Santorum, Ann Romney,” the actor listed the wives of the presidential contenders. "Do you really think our country is ready for a white first lady?" In response, someone from the audience shouted: "No!" And the actor continued: "It's too early, isn't it?"

The next day, Michelle Obama's office circulated a press release in which the celebrity's remark was called "inappropriate."

In response, Robert De Niro issued a statement in which he explained that he did not want to offend anyone with his comment. He stated that his remark "although it was satirical, it was not intended to offend or embarrass anyone, especially the first lady."
