American scientists have once again surprised the world. Or rather, that part of it that relates to employees. As it turns out, the sarcastic joke "Smile, the boss loves idiots" is mostly true. The fact is that if you smile at your work colleagues or clients in a disingenuous way, you can end up falling into a deep depression.

The experiment, which was carried out by specialists from the University of Michigan, involved bus drivers who were monitored for two weeks. Careful observation showed that on days when the subjects were hard and they squeezed out a smile, they were gloomy and more inclined to refuse work. There were also women in the group. It turned out that they are more likely to feign joy.

Experts suggest that the tendency to mask negative thoughts may make those thoughts even more persistent.

As a result, at the end of the experiment, the scientists came to the conclusion that an insincere smile not only worsens the mood, but also noticeably affects labor productivity for the worse. This is contrary to the corporate ethics of many firms, whose employees must be friendly every second. This applies primarily to salespeople, bank employees, call center employees, and so on.

“Employers think that making their employees smile will be a big plus for the organization. However, this is not entirely true, because smiling for the sake of a smile can lead to emotional exhaustion, - explained one of the study's authors, Brent Scott.

How can you tell a sincere smile from an insincere one? Scientists recommend paying attention to the eyes of the interlocutor, writes Ytro.ru. When a person smiles heartily, the corners of his eyes rise. If the facial expressions of the upper part of the face remain motionless, then you have been presented with an insincere smile.
