There are numerous legends about her appearance and organizational qualities. But did the Egyptian queen Cleopatra really die from a snakebite? According to German scientists, this version does not fit at all with the usual female psychology.

The legendary queen Cleopatra died after taking a lethal dose of opium mixed with poison. German scientists came to such conclusions after analyzing the circumstances of the death of the famous ruler of Egypt in antiquity.

Traditionally, it is believed that Cleopatra committed suicide in 30 BC by allowing a venomous snake to bite her. However, researchers now believe that such a method would be too painful.

From sources that have come down to us, it is known that the queen committed suicide after the death of her beloved, the great Roman commander Mark Anthony. According to legend, Cleopatra buried her beloved with all the honors in an exquisite tomb, and then locked herself in her own tomb, where she was later found dead. However, the tomb of the queen has not yet been found.

“Queen Cleopatra was famous for her beauty, and it is unlikely that she wanted to subject herself to such a long and ugly death,” says Christoph Schaefer, professor at the University of Trier. To test his hypothesis, he went along with other experts to the ancient capital of Egypt, Alexandria, where he studied medical texts from the times of antiquity, writes Ytro.ru. Also, the scientist consulted with specialists in snakes.

“Cleopatra wanted to remain beautiful at the time of her death, as well as during her life. She probably took a cocktail of opium and poisonous herbs. In those days, it was a well-known remedy that allowed you to die painlessly in a few hours. At the same time, death from snake venom could occur only after several days of agony,”the researcher believes.
