More than 2,000 "brides" from Eastern Europe officially enter Italy annually, about half of them are girls from Russia and Ukraine. Unfortunately, the Italian Immigration Service does not have accurate data on the divorce rate of such couples, but we have all read horror stories about brothels that hide behind marriage agencies, and about mossy grooms looking for girls from Eastern Europe, because in our homeland, no self-respecting woman will even look in their direction.

All this is a terrible truth, which pours out into indignant articles on the pages of newspapers, and we read, horrified and pity our desperate compatriots who, in search of a better life, married the first monster with a foreign passport.

Stop! That's right, girls marry a passport, for the opportunity to become a citizen of some prosperous country, and the life of that very foreign groom, who is not needed and is not taken into account, is often sacrificed to these dreams and the cover of a passport with foreign coats of arms …

Long queues at the Russian Consulate in Milan. Most of those in the queue are future wives who need different certificates for their marriage. Waiting encourages acquaintances, girls liven up, exchange stories and advice for all occasions …

Sveta is a bright, beautiful blonde. A couple of years ago, she divorced her drunken husband in her native Saratov and decided that life in the provinces was not for her. Having sent ads to various agencies, such a beauty immediately received a huge number of responses from suitors from all over the world. I decided not to go to America, not to take risks, it was too far, but the girl looked at Europe "… And they paid me everything, they took me everywhere, tried to please me. I looked at all European capitals, is it bad? And then she said that we were not suitable friend friend, and left. And there can be no complaints! " As a result, Sveta chose an Italian from all potential applicants. "And what? The country is beautiful, and what kind of house it has, you should have seen - a villa on the seashore!" After a while, the future husband also appeared - a little man in glasses, glowing with happiness and pride for his beautiful wife, and with a wild accent said to us "Good dien!" … Sveta smiled cynically: "Well, look at him, he has already begun to learn Russian! It's okay, as soon as I get citizenship, get divorced and find myself a normal man, have you seen what handsome men walk the streets?" Almost all the girls in line nodded their heads in agreement …

When you live abroad for a long time, every day you see small tragedies in front of your eyes, in which a Russian wife plays the role of a victim, and a foreign husband plays the role of a bastard and a satrap. How, this moldy morel has snatched off such a beauty as his wife and demands something else instead of being grateful to her for the rest of her life for such happiness!

At one time, a memorable couple lived in our house: a 55-year-old professor husband - a fat man with a gray beard - and his wife, a bitchy Ukrainian maiden for 20 years. Rita came to Italy, like most of her compatriots, to work as a cleaner, but with the expectation of getting married and staying in Italy forever. While cleaning the floors, she was noticed by a modest university professor, who immediately fell in love with the girl and offered her a hand and a heart. Almost like in a fairy tale about Cinderella, only now the prince turned out to be elderly and not rich, not ready for the raids of his young wife on fashion boutiques … Sometimes in the evenings Rita sobbed in my kitchen: “Can you imagine, I bought myself boots from Gucci, so he told me that we will not live on his salary alone with such purchases! And he also dares to hint at me that I should go to work! He saw himself in the mirror! And I found …

As in a joke, one day my husband returned home from work early and found Rita in the arms of a plumber. The professor was taken to the hospital with a heart attack, and an honest plumber married my Ukrainian neighbor and took her somewhere in the south of Italy. I don’t know how Rita’s fate developed, but her deceived old husband never fully recovered from a heart attack …

Once a friend brought me to a meeting of the Russian community in our city. Almost all of the participants were housewives, provincial girls who got married via Internet correspondence or through marriage agencies. A couple of months of passionate letters within the framework of modest linguistic opportunities, a visit to Italy to the groom, a positive assessment of the house and financial condition, and a hasty marriage. And then - the darkness of life side by side with an absolutely unloved and uninteresting person, which makes these girls rage at the impossibility of changing anything. To obtain Italian citizenship, you need to live together for at least three years, and then bureaucratic procedures are delayed for several more years. As a result, the beautiful wife turns into a bitch who suffers herself and poisons the life of her husband - the holder of the cherished passport … Conversations at meetings in the Russian community revolve around the same thing - how to get interviews in the immigration department more quickly, how to speed up the procedures for obtaining citizenship, how to get a divorce as soon as possible …. Many of the girls do not even speak Italian, because the husband has learned Russian, and in general they prefer to communicate only with their friends from the community, and none of them are interested in education or work: "I got married, here let her husband support!"

All of these are just isolated cases from the lives of our compatriots abroad, which add up to the overall unsightly image of "Russian brides". After what you see, you understand why the Russian passport in the immigration service causes only a squeamish grin and comments through clenched teeth "… another Russian has arrived for citizenship."

The most offensive thing is that such an attitude poisons life only for those who really married for love and hopes to live happily with their chosen one all their lives. For such couples, every day turns into an attempt to overcome the prejudice of bureaucratic structures and discriminatory laws. These families must constantly endure the humiliation of control visits by the immigration police to their homes ("Signora, why is your husband still at work at 8 pm? I see he is in no hurry to go home …"), submit a report on his wife's income ("Signora is working? however, usually Russian girls prefer to be kept women … ") and do their best to protect the fragile family harmony from mistrust on the part of the authorities, family and friends of the husband.

And "our unfortunate compatriots," who married a passport, simply do not pay attention to such trifles: for them, these are just annoying obstacles on the way to the cherished citizenship, which they bypass easily and naturally, leaving behind them the crippled fate of a "foreign husband" and a trail of dislike for "these Russians."

Maybe now you are looking at the site of some marriage agency or sorting through the profiles of foreign "suitors" - small, bald, ugly, whom you would not have looked at in your life, if they were not citizens of some overseas state …

Try to imagine that behind every photo there is a living person, misunderstood and unloved in his homeland, who turns to you in the hope of being happy, and ask yourself the question: "Do I have the right to dispose of his life for my own purposes?"
