What preventive measures are you taking in the run-up to the seasonal flu epidemic? One of the most popular remedies is garlic. But not everyone likes amber after using it. Fortunately, European doctors have found a less odorous remedy that has a fairly high antiviral activity.

Scientists from the Food Research Institute in Norwich and the University Hospital in Messina have conducted experiments that reveal the unique properties of almonds.

It turns out that almond skin improves the ability of white blood cells to find viruses and increases the activity of the natural mechanism that prevents viruses from dividing and spreading in the body.

In particular, the components of brown almond husk stimulate white blood cells. A specific type of these cells - lymphocytes - is just responsible for the detection and neutralization of viral agents that have entered the human body. Remarkably, even after the almonds were digested, there was an increase in immune defense against viruses.

It should be borne in mind that nuts are completely "deactivated" when processed in boiling water - the most common way to get rid of the peel of almonds.

"Almonds stimulate the immune system, we have recorded a stable antiviral activity," - said the author of the study, immunologist Giuseppina Mandalari. She and her colleagues are convinced that eating enough of these nuts will help protect against viruses, including those that cause seasonal colds.

Scientists are seriously considering using almonds to combat regular flu epidemics. Immunologists have found that walnut extract even suppresses the herpes virus. They consider about 80-100 grams a day to be a "healing" portion.
