Carefully monitor your figure, and also take good care of your health? In this case, do not rush to sound the alarm if, after the New Year holidays, you notice a little fat on the hips and buttocks. According to British researchers, such deposits are beneficial for health, as they prevent metabolic problems and heart disease.

The accumulation of fat in the waist (called upper fat), buttocks and thighs (lower fat) affects the body in different ways, says Konstantinos Manolopolos of the Center for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Oxford in the UK.

If the upper fat is certainly harmful, then the lower one is rather useful, since it plays an important protective role. Fat on the thighs absorbs dangerous fatty acids and contains an anti-inflammatory agent that prevents clogged arteries.

In the future, doctors may recommend different methods to redistribute body fat in order to protect against cardiovascular disease and metabolic diseases such as diabetes, the researchers suggest.

In an article published in the International Journal of Obesity, Manolopolos cites data from 21 independent studies on people of different ages and body weights that support his point of view.

So, one of the studies, which covered 27 thousand people, revealed a relationship between hip circumference and a lower risk of myocardial infarction. Another study found that the fuller the thighs, the lower the risk of coronary artery disease. In addition, the amount of lower fat is directly proportional to the level of ascorbic acid in blood plasma - the most important antioxidant that protects blood vessels.

“The shape of the body and the location of fat deposits matter. Fat on the hips and thighs is good, but fat around the belly is bad,”says Manolopolos. Ideally, the scientist believes, the more fat on the thighs, the better it is if the belly remains flat. “Unfortunately, fat is usually gained in both,” he adds.
