Yesterday in the American city of Bayonne (New Jersey), a ceremony was held to unveil a monument to the victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks by sculptor Zurab Tsereteli. The Tear of Sorrow Monument is a gift from Russians to the American people in memory of the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

The opening ceremony was attended by former US President Bill Clinton, his wife Hillary and Secretary of National Security Michael Chertoff. Among the guests of the ceremony was also the speaker of the Federation Council of Russia Sergei Mironov.

The monument, which is a 30-meter bronze slab with a 12-meter steel drop hanging in a crack, is installed on the shores of the Hudson Bay, which separates Bayonne from Manhattan, where the World Trade Center Twin Towers were destroyed in a terrorist attack. The names of almost 3 thousand people who died on September 11, 2001 are engraved on the monument.

In his message, the US President thanked the Russian sculptor and the Russian people for the donated monument. He stressed that the Tears of Sorrow monument is "a powerful reminder that the best hope for the preservation of peace is the spread of freedom." George W. Bush also said that the United States shares "the pain and suffering of peace-loving peoples who have also survived terrorist attacks, including the heinous school crime in Beslan."
