American experts on the history of emigration made an interesting discovery - the legendary king of rock and roll Elvis Presley comes from a gypsy family. However, the singer's biographers and ethnologists consider such a version unlikely.
According to the magazine on the history of American emigration, Elvis Presley came from a family of German gypsies who emigrated to America in the early 18th century, NEWSru.com writes with reference to the Daily Mail.
The researchers were prompted to a similar conclusion by the maiden name of the mother of the famous singer - Smith. According to the authors of the article, this is the name most often taken by immigrants from British Roma. In turn, the real surname of the musician's father was Presler and he came from a Gypsy family who settled by the beginning of the 18th century on the territory of modern Germany.
The magazine also traces the family tree of Charlie Chaplin and actress Rita Hayworth, whose ancestors, according to the authors, also came from gypsy families.
However, Presley's biographers claim that the musician himself never mentioned his émigré origins. Doubts about the gypsy roots of the king of rock and roll were expressed by experts in ethnology. In particular, the writer and researcher David Alter believes that even if the hypothesis is correct, then "the presence of Roma ancestors 300 years ago does not mean ethnicity to this people."
Elvis Aaron Presley was born on January 8, 1935 in the American city of Tupelo, Mississippi. Despite the three decades that have passed since his death, the singer continues to be the most successful performer of popular music of the 20th century. Over 117 million discs have been circulated on his albums, far more than other artists. During his career, the singer has released more than 100 albums and singles, which continue to be successfully reprinted even after his death.
