Video: The reason for the war between Azerbaijan and Armenia
2024 Author: James Gerald | [email protected]. Last modified: 2023-12-17 14:00
In July 2020, the news spread around the world that a conflict again occurred between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Disagreements between these countries began in 1987. But why did they resume after so many years?
We do not take sides - our material is based on free sources. The information was based on data from Wikipedia. We are against war!
History of the development of events
The conflict between the countries, which began in 1987, arose over the status of Nagorno-Karabakh. By the end of 1988, the governments involved almost all the inhabitants of Armenia and Azerbaijan in the conflict. The situation ceased to concern only Nagorno-Karabakh and acquired an interethnic scale.
In 1991, it turned into an interethnic war that lasted for 3 years. In mid-May 1994, the parties signed a ceasefire agreement. Thanks to this, peace negotiations began between the countries.
The ceasefire agreement was repeatedly violated during 2012-2018, and in September 2020 the conflict flared up with renewed vigor. At the end of the month (27th day), a full-scale war broke out between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
The reason for the conflict
Thousands of people cannot understand what is the real reason for the war between these countries. In an interview, Ilgar Iskenderov, Consul General of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Urals, explained what caused the conflict around the disputed region in the Transcaucasus:
“Nagorno-Karabakh is a territory that includes not only the unrecognized republic, but also the Shusha region. There are seven more districts around them: Lachin, Zangelan, Kelbajar, Kubatli, Aghdam, Fizuli and Jabrail. These seven regions are additionally occupied and have nothing to do with Nagorno-Karabakh. If you pay attention to the map of Azerbaijan, you can see that together they occupy 20% of the entire territory. They took our own lands from us. We did not give our consent, and in no conversation did we mention that it was acceptable,”he says.

When asked about the termination of the peace agreement, he replied:
“Recently in the Armenian parliament it was incitingly announced that Karabakh is a part of Armenia, and they did not want to discuss it. Immediately after that, they began to elect a president according to their fictitious regime, provoke some areas and start conflicts, although these areas have nothing to do with the Nagorno-Karabakh problem. In July 2020, one of the peaceful regions (Tovuz) of Azerbaijan came under fire. It is located 250 kilometers from Nagorno-Karabakh and does not touch the conflict in any way. Because of this, fighting began. Peaceful, innocent inhabitants died … And during the last battles they fired at the well-known peaceful city of Naftalan. In addition, they are destroying historical monuments of Azerbaijani origin. All these reasons influenced the fact that we decided to terminate the ceasefire agreement."
Ilgar Iskenderov also said that the war will not end until Azerbaijan recaptures Nagorno-Karabakh.
How many people died
Among the victims since September 27 in Nagorno-Karabakh are citizens of both Armenia and Azerbaijan. But their number is still difficult to establish, since the data from different sources do not coincide.
During the aggravation of the conflict in Armenia, it was said about 202 dead (as of October 3, 2020), and in Azerbaijan about 540 dead. The number of casualties is daunting, given that the war has only lasted a week.
The likelihood of peace in the region
Residents of both countries have grown accustomed to living in tension over the years. They talk about why the war started. The conflict took place at the government level. The civilians did not want war at all. If not for the long-standing conflict, perhaps they would have lived better - the population certainly does not need war.
The governments of both countries note that a cessation of hostilities is not being considered in the near future. Armenia does not agree to give up Nagorno-Karabakh, and Azerbaijan does not intend to leave it to Armenia.
Outcomes
The reason for the war between Armenia and Azerbaijan in 2020 was and remains the disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh. Residents on each side of the conflict are eagerly awaiting improvements that, apparently, are not expected in the near future.
In mid-July 2020, the situation between the countries escalated to the limit and at the end of September turned into a war. The ceasefire agreement was finally violated, and now the government of Azerbaijan is determined to reclaim Nagorno-Karabakh.
According to experts, during the week of the war, Armenia lost 202 people, and Azerbaijan - 540. It was also reported that another 16 people were found at the border. The citizens of which country they were has not yet been established.
